CALARTS EXPO 2022

Reflecting CalArts’ experimental ethos, the Institute’s CalArts Expo features creatively adventurous and imaginative projects by students, faculty, and alumni representing every school at CalArts. Expo’s exhibitions and performances run from afternoon to late evening in venues including the ROD Concert Hall, MOD Theater, Main Gallery, Wild Beast, Machine Lab, and more. Highlighting student projects created during the current academic year, before moving online in 2020, CalArts Expo annually presented work by over 500 artists in 21 venues throughout campus, including installations, concerts, dance, electronic performances, theater portfolios, projections, films, artist talks, and experience design. On May 5, 2022, Expo returns to campus in person with immersive, personal, and communal spaces for exhibition and performance of new work from across all disciplines of the Institute. CalArts Expo 2022 highlights the immense creativity of the CalArts community and confronts new artistic and performative challenges of our current pandemic landscape in a profound and creative way.

All Metal

Metal music is not a monolith and we created this project with the intent of bringing a handful of metalheads with a very diverse listening background together to compose music that exists at the crossroads between many different genres of metal music. Each individual band member has a different stylistic approach to writing and playing heavy music and through our original compositions, we have worked on merging those together in a way that is harmonious and unique.

The duo is currently working on a performance set that can be adjusted to last between 5 minutes to a maximum of 30 minutes, considering all of the music is performed live. There is a session in Ableton Live where there are scenes of rhythm, samples and synthesizers that Luisa manipulates to give structure to the music set, it is divided mainly in 3 sections, where Drew improvises with distorted Guitar harmonies and melodies, that are based on a previous composition for every section, it involves pedal manipulation and looping while the clocks are synch’d.
