Generative Drum Notation

I’ve been fortunate enough to find remote work throughout the pandemic as a professional drum transcriber for an educational platform. While I’ve gotten efficient at transcribing, anyone will tell you that creating drum notation is time consuming. So I began wondering if there was a realistic way to combine drums with code to automate the process –even to turn a drum performance into a creative work of generative visual art that draws listeners (and viewers) in. Throughout the pandemic I’ve been workshopping various ways that this could happen, and I wanted to showcase a few of them at this year’s Expo.

So have a sit behind my kit, play a fat groove and see it notated before your eyes. The sketches range between relatively standard notation and abstract shapes. Which method is your favorite? Do you have any ideas on what to create next? I’d love to know!
