Reflecting CalArts’ experimental ethos, the Institute’s CalArts Expo features creatively adventurous and imaginative projects by students, faculty, and alumni representing every school at CalArts. Expo’s exhibitions and performances run from afternoon to late evening in venues including the ROD Concert Hall, MOD Theater, Main Gallery, Wild Beast, Machine Lab, and more. Highlighting student projects created during the current academic year, before moving online in 2020, CalArts Expo annually presented work by over 500 artists in 21 venues throughout campus, including installations, concerts, dance, electronic performances, theater portfolios, projections, films, artist talks, and experience design. On May 5, 2022, Expo returns to campus in person with immersive, personal, and communal spaces for exhibition and performance of new work from across all disciplines of the Institute. CalArts Expo 2022 highlights the immense creativity of the CalArts community and confronts new artistic and performative challenges of our current pandemic landscape in a profound and creative way.

«Ru Da Dé» means «Dodged» in Pular. From this translation, a visual and sound installation was set up. Upon entering this space under the light of a half-blinding spotlight, the visitor is framed by photographic prints on the two side walls of the exhibition room. On the right, a particular spotlight illuminates a portrait, that of Jae, who seems to be dodging the lens and dismayed at having been captured in a photograph.

DnL is an experimental electronic duo. They started to collaborate in 2021 when Luisa Pinzon and Drew Sense Weinstein started their MFA in Music Technology and Composition and Experimental Sound Practices (respectively) . The first performance of DnL was in the Halloween Party at CalArts the 19th of November of 2021. The duo is currently working on a performance set that can be adjusted to last between 5 minutes to a maximum of 30 minutes, considering all of the music is performed live. There is a session in Ableton Live where there are scenes of rhythm, samples and synthesizers that Luisa manipulates to give structure to the music set, it is divided mainly in 3 sections, where Drew improvises with distorted Guitar harmonies and melodies, that are based on a previous composition for every section, it involves pedal manipulation and looping while the clocks are synch’d.

Olivia Xing is the actor and playwright of Zhinü's Tale. Using the element of fantasy, she strives to understand the history of herself and others.
The score calls for musicians to begin with their hands and feet bound behind their back while they try to play their instrument. Once they are unbound they may begin to play their instruments “correctly”. The piece ends once everyone is unbound.
The Opera Dada Project, inspired by the women artists of the Dada movement, features original performance art between 19 collaborators. The Opera Dada Project highlights the voice (both acoustic and electronic) through original music, improvisation, graphic scores, and extended vocal techniques. The pieces within the Opera Dada Project are an eclectic mix ranging from campy to grim and draw from the works of Emmy Hennings, Mina Loy, Baroness Elsa Von Freytag-Loringhoven, Hannah Höch, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Sayako Kishimoto, and Florine Stettheimer, among others. The Opera Dada Project was born from J. Bobak’s Dada’s Divas class. The Opera Dada Project will present pieces alongside the Futurist Dinner Party (another CalArts Expo submission), outside the Wild Beast. Together, the Opera Dada Project and the Futurist Dinner Party will last 45 minutes.
