Shellog and Malkis is a large gouache and ink diptych depicting twin mythological beasts created by the artist. Each drawing contains a collection of memories sourced from the artist’s camer roll on his phone. Shellog and Malkis use these memories as a key source of sustenance for themselves and an entire otherworldly ecosystem that surrounds them. As the inhabitants of this world interact with these memories, they become slightly altered, leaving the broader narrative in a state of constant flux.
For expo 2022, the artist has turned these works into a full installation, incorporating a monitor, projection mapping, and custom frames to further immerse viewers in this elaborate fantasy world.
Dylan Jones (BFA class of 2021) is an illustrator and multimedia artist living and working in Los Angeles. This work is the latest addition to an ongoing world building project called the Spiral of Hoobis
