‘May Bring You Darkness Instead of Light’ is a solo-dance performance and film installation inspired by the work and life of Georgia O’Keefe. The work draws influence specifically from the movement, colors, tone, and sensuality of O’Keefe’s watercolor series as well as photographed portraits of O’Keefe by Alfred Stieglitz. These visual sources inspire a dance that explores various aspects of femininity, places a focus on gestural movement, and utilizes quick dynamic shifts between presentational choreographed movement sequences and emotionally-charged improvisation scores. The soundscape and filmed elements of the installation will integrate citations from ‘My Faraway One’, a compilation of thousands of letters exchanged between O’Keeffe and Stieglitz throughout the course of their artistic and romantic journey. The work is currently in creative process in collaboration with CalArts lighting designer/cinematographer Claire Chrzan and composer Sebastian Rechner.
