MFA2 - School of Dance
A three channel video installation of MFA Thesis movement landscape created by Alexsa Durrans, Vestige of a Trace identifies a nameless, mundane and languid routine of 3 cameras following 3 dancers perpetually moving through space on vast expanses of concrete. The work is filmed in a parking lot, revealing the dancers negotiating their own muscle memories and considering the information they collect as processes of tracing. The cameras survey and also archive the dancer’s gridlocking and spanning patterns. The multichannel display speculates the way their movement is shaped and changed by the location and suggests the ways individual pathways synchronize and intersect with others. Inching in waves across the sprawl of asphalt, Vestige of Trace explores how sculpted spaces disperse, split, align and intersect the body. The dancers work to reveal that this landscape is in fact a chosen, constructed, carved and directed system of participation.
